The men believed that violence would get them nowhere in their protesting and it would not be effective. Civil disobedience was a main view for both of them men. They both wrote from gaol for their civil disobedience. Thoreau wrote about his night in jail for not having gainful a tax that was organism used for unjust causes. He says in Civil noncompliance that he felt surplus staying that night in jail and everyone else was not. King broke requisition laws against blacks and that is what caused him to end up in jail.
