The tertiary institutions provide students with the university regulations which indicates the penalties applied to a student who commits an academic offense. Other ways in which students display academic dishonesty is by collusion and cheating(Adelaide, 2014). For instance, a student may be assisted by another to complete an assignment and the assignment would be similar to another students. Other students may present a copy of their fellow students work. Each student is expected to present their independent work unless the rubric requires the work be done by a group of students. A lot of research work has been done over the years and different ideas have been published. Each student can borrow several ideas from previously work done. One can choose to critic the work and use another research to support their points. It is, therefore, necessary to clearly cite the sources of the ideas adopted. There are several standards designed for citation in different fields. When writing English and literature based work one can use the APA, MLA, Harvard, or Chicago referencing styles. When writing scientific work, a student can use any of the listed referencing styles or one can choose to use the IEEE referencing style and footnoting system. Some tutors specify which referencing style they need used for given assignments(Society, 2005). At the entry level in each tertiary institution, the students are introduced to the different referencing styles. Tutors do not intend to have all the assignments referenced at the beginning. They develop the skill of proper citation as the students get exposed to more research work. In a nutshell, referencing is the proper way of acknowledging previously done research. Failure to cite the source of work leads to plagiarism. Students who plagiarize are said to have committed an academic offense which attracts heavy penalties to an extent of expulsion.
